Knowing The Innovations In The Los Angeles Landscape

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

For many decades landscape designers have emulated the Los Angeles landscape in their plans. It has always been a leader in innovation aesthetically and continues to be one today. There are some simple steps to take to learn what you need to copy some of the flair L. A.

The weather in California and the L. A. Region in general are very conducive to outdoor living. Having an outdoor living space is very common. Many homes feature outdoor kitchens and outdoor living areas in the backyard.

When you think of the L. A. Landscape think water. Water is an essential element to the lifestyle here whether you think of the beaches or the backyard livability. Swimming pools are very common in California as you can imagine however, what’s new is the addition of using salt water. Salt water is great for sustainability as well as having health benefits. Infinity pools are also growing in popularity, they are also called edgeless pools which give the illusion of the waters edge drifting into the landscape.

A popular look is using a zen like approach with the pebbles and koi ponds. Waterfalls are not only poolside, they are throughout the gardens. Fountains have been popular for many years and continue to be today.

If you find yourself in a garden in Los Angeles, it will probably be very colorful and very tropical. This style lends itself well to the people, the natural landscape and the climate. Reading areas with terraces continue to grow in popularity. Many gardens host fuchsia, dahlia, tropical plants and palm trees.

However, water conservation is something that needs careful consideration since the area is prone to droughts. Drought resistant plant and gardens are all the rage. So, you will see lots of deer grass, lilac and Russian Sage growing.

The climate and it’s tendency to inflict drought has made rock gardens very popular. They are a very drought resistant choice as well as being very easy to maintain. The sizes range with the size of the space and the budget, from pebbles to huge boulders.

A final feature you will not want to miss is the openness of the spaces with the ability to retract entire ceilings and walls when the weather is nice. That is truly bringing the indoors out in a functional and literal sense. Nothing says the great outdoors then opening the wall with a touch of a button and being a part of it.

There are many practical and new ideas you can get for your own home by looking at the trends of the Los Angeles landscape. There is something for any climate that can be adjusted to fit your needs. So get outside and enjoy a little piece of L. A. In your own space.

When you have a climate that encourages outdoor rooms, landscape design is especially important to homeowners. Los Angeles landscape professionals have the experience to make your lawn and patio attractive and functional.

Denver Landscape Design: How Can You Avoid Errors Even Seasoned Professionals Make?

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

A beautiful garden is one of the few significant investments that truly gives us lasting joy. As with any investment, it’s important to avoid costly missteps, and avoid errors that can detract from the desired result: a beautiful garden. I recently interviewed Tom Altgelt, an acclaimed landscape architect in the Denver/Boulder area, about the biggest errors he frequently sees, not only here in Denver, Colorado the Denver/Boulder area but also in Europe and New England where he has practiced. Altgelt lists several universal errors including “not designing for the whole cycle of the year, forgetting to master plan and look at the big picture and, perhaps most importantly, neglecting to assemble a great team.”

The first of these common errors is to have too much focus on how the landscape will look in the spring and summer. These are the seasons people visualize when they think of a garden, because when it’s warm all the plants are blooming and decked out with foliage. However, according to Tom Altgelt, “a great garden works all year round, reflecting beautifully the cycle of the seasons. While a really skilled designer will pay equal attention to all four seasons, I have commonly seen even design professionals make the mistake of over-emphasizing spring and summer interest with not enough to keep the garden beautiful and inspiring through the fall and winter.” However, if anything, it’s the cold seasons when we really need inspiration from our landscape the most! This is especially the case in Colorado, because our harsh weather can start early and end late, alternating with many nice days. A garden that is beautiful in any weather will be much appreciated here in Colorado.

Tom Altgelt lists four elements for creating a beautiful four-season landscape: sculpting the earth itself; creating rock formations as though they are emerging naturally from that sculpted earth; utilizing evergreen plants; and also including deciduous plants which show interesting colors and shapes after the fall of the leaves. Altgelt says, “Combining these four elements artistically will create a beautiful fall and winter garden, while synergistically adding to the spring and summer interest!”

Secondly, it is very common for people to design only a portion of the landscape instead of starting with a master plan. Without having a well thought-out master plan, a homeowner may put in one element of landscaping this year that will conflict with another element they want to put in next year. “This mistake can end up being very costly to the homeowner in the long run.”

“For example, the homeowner may say, ‘I need a water feature,’ and design that in isolation, without considering their long-term goals. When they put in that water feature, they may be blocking access to an area where, down the road, it turns out that they want to create another point of interest by putting in some big rocks.” In this case, when the time comes to put in those rocks, it may not be possible to get the equipment in past the water feature! Or, they may have to destroy the work that was already done and redo it again later. This is only one of many expensive problems Tom has seen which could have been avoided simply by starting with a detailed master-plan.

The third most common mistake Altgelt sees, for those who hire a team to help them, is putting together the wrong team. “To assemble a good team, of course you need to see samples of each individuals’ work and get references, but it doesn’t end there. The key ingredient, which is often missing, is teamwork.” How they communicate and work together, how they inspire each other – their “chemistry” – is crucial.

One key component to this teamwork is for the professionals to really listen to their client. “Often, a client needs help with articulating his dreams, or even being aware of what would make him the most pleased with his garden.” If the landscape designer excludes the homeowner from the design process, the result is less likely to be a landscape uniquely suited to the client. In addition, continues Tom, “the landscape contractor and, for new construction, the architect are also part of the landscape design team, which is ideally put together before the architect makes the first sketch of the house.”

Tom sums it up: “By avoiding these three common mistakes, not only can the homeowner save money, but the end result can be an artistic expression of the homeowner’s deepest dreams for his or her garden.” What a wonderful way for an investment to pay off!

Numerous Selections For Los Angeles Landscape Design Ideas

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Landscape design varies from region to region, but Los Angeles landscape design is unique in that it is a desert that people treat as an oasis.

The desert is a dry, hot climate. Los Angeles is in a desert. But because it is sunny and mild every day, people insist on year long green grass lawns and will go to any lengths to get just that. That is because every day seems like a warm, sunny day. And they want to treat it that way. Palm trees were brought over, or the seeds were blown over, from Hawaii. But the desert was never meant to grow coconuts.

Phoenix is hot and dry, too, as it is also a desert. The landscapes there are largely desert scapes where the flowers and shrubs are scant, and the front yards are made up of huge boulders, other rock formations, and gravel paths. The few flowers still need water, so an irrigation system is installed and put on a timer to keep these plants alive in this desert.

Irrigation systems are very popular in California, as it does not often rain there. To keep up with the watering of these tropical plants in the backyards of many Los Angeles homes, the system of watering is put on a timer, so that this can be taken care of automatically two or three times per day.

Although it may not seem right to combine desert climate with tropical plants, it somehow works in L. A. The lush gardens get plenty of sun, and the watering systems take over the watering of the plants, and they survive very nicely.

Homeowners will go to extremes, like adding fertilizer that keeps their grass green throughout the seasons, they will blow old leaves away instead of letting them follow their natural course to become mulch. And they will sculpt shrubbery to depict different objects and characters, regardless of how it may hurt the plant.

Wrought iron gates may welcome you into the grand front yard, with a swirling driveway of colored decorative gravel. Palm trees salute you as you drive by, and the Japanese fruit trees are all in a row, as well. Seemingly all very unnatural, and yet elegant in style is the Los Angeles landscape design.

Find important information on how you can raise the value of your property and home when you include a dynamic landscape design in your planning. Contacting Los Angeles Landscape Design today will be the first step in achieving your goals for a stunning garden!
